THE SUNDAY HOUSE STORY

My Story & Essential Tips for Aspiring Interior Designers

A little about little me

Growing up, I moved around a lot, and every new house meant a fresh chance to start over. I was that kid who couldn’t wait to rearrange my room at every opportunity, and PBteen bedding was at the top of my Christmas list year after year. I would sketch out room layouts in my butterfly chair (IYKYK!), dreaming up endless possibilities to make each space my own. My love for design started early, but it took a few twists and turns before it became my career.

I didn’t go to a traditional college after high school—I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and going the classic university route just wasn’t financially realistic. Instead, I became a freelance makeup artist with Bobbi Brown, traveling around the Pacific Northwest. That job taught me so much about people, creativity, and bringing a vision to life. I loved helping women feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. Honestly, I use those same skills today as a designer—working with people to create something personal and unique, making them feel comfortable, and selling a creative vision that makes them feel good, and that career path is really what paved the way to start taking Interior Design seriously.

Eventually, my love for beautiful spaces led me to trade school for interior design. The technical training was helpful, but I can tell you 90% of what I know now came from experience, learning by doing, and making a few (okay, a lot of) mistakes along the way. In 2019, I finally took the plunge and launched my design business. It was not glamorous in the beginning—I charged $25 an hour, took on every project that came my way, and leaned heavily on Target and HomeGoods finds. But each little project brought me closer to the creative vision I had for the studio.

Fast forward nearly six years, and I now have a small team of five designers who share that same passion for creating beautiful, thoughtful spaces. I can finally say the studio I dreamed of feels like a reality, and we’re able to take on projects that are truly fulfilling. Every long day, every tiny project, and every late night working on the business has led me to this place, and I wouldn’t trade a single moment of the journey.

Through it all, I’ve had so many aspiring designers ask how to get started in the industry. If that’s you, whether you’re hoping to go freelance or join a design firm, here’s my best advice:

Make Sure You Have a Natural Touch for Design
First and foremost, having a designer’s eye is key. What makes a designer stand out is a love for all the beautiful details—textures, colors, shapes, and those little touches that make a space sing. Pay attention to the details (and yes, the math!), because interior design is more about precision than it may seem. You’ve got to be comfortable with measurements, spreadsheets, and budgets. And let’s not forget people skills—being able to communicate your vision clearly is everything!

Sharpen Your Technical Skills
Even though honing my technical skills wasn’t a top priority for me personally, it's something I really pay attention to when hiring. If you're aiming to work with a boutique agency or a design firm, having a solid grasp of technical tools is essential. Programs like SketchUp and AutoCAD will make you a rockstar—trust me, they’re game-changers (I’m more on the creative side, but I see their power!). If you’re someone who loves diving into the details, this could be your sweet spot!

Start Small, Build Your Portfolio
Take the plunge and start with friends, family, or even your own space. Offer to design for free at first to get some solid before-and-afters for your portfolio. It’ll also help you figure out if this is your true calling and give you the proof you need to show off your work as you grow.

Just Start! Don’t Wait for Perfect
Perfection isn’t the goal when you’re starting out. Your style, taste, and skill will evolve with every project, so don’t stress about making it “perfect” right out of the gate. Get the exposure and experience you need, whether through internships or side gigs. The more you immerse yourself, the faster you’ll grow.

Stay on Top of Trends
The design world is constantly changing, so keep yourself inspired and informed about the latest trends, materials, and innovations. It shows clients you’re in the know, and you’ll always have fresh ideas at your fingertips.

Let Your Creativity Shine
Creativity is the heart of interior design. Every project is a chance to bring your unique vision to life. Clients hire you for your perspective, so own it and make every space completely unique to your special touch!

Breaking into design may not be easy, but with a love for the craft, a commitment to learning, and a lot of dedication, you can absolutely create something amazing. Start where you are, enjoy the journey, and remember—every project, big or small, is a step forward.
